Can I just use a free VPN?
Free VPNs are almost never effective for SMS verification. The services we want to verify against (WhatsApp, Tinder, Google, etc.) maintain blocklists of free-VPN exit IPs and refuse to send SMS to numbers when the user is on one. Free VPN IPs are flagged as "data center" or "shared commercial" IPs — the exact pattern that triggers refusal. If you want any chance of success on strict services, use a residential or mobile proxy. The cheapest residential option (IPRoyal) is under $2 per GB and a single verification uses less than 10 MB.
What is the difference between residential, mobile, and datacenter proxies?
Datacenter proxies are IPs from cloud providers (AWS, Google Cloud, OVH). Cheap, fast, but easily detected and blocked. Useful for scraping but not for SMS verification.
Residential proxies are IPs assigned to real home internet connections through providers like Comcast, BT, Deutsche Telekom. They look like real users and pass most fraud checks.
Mobile proxies are IPs from real 3G/4G/5G mobile networks. They are the most trusted by services like WhatsApp and Instagram because they perfectly match what a normal mobile user looks like. They are also the most expensive.
Do I need a proxy for every verification?
Strictly speaking, no — but you should. Some easier services (Telegram, Discord, Steam, most marketplaces) will accept SMS without a matching IP. The harder services (WhatsApp, Tinder, Google, Binance, PayPal, dating apps) almost always require it. The safer rule of thumb is: use a matching proxy for everything. The cost difference is negligible and you eliminate the biggest cause of failed verifications.
How do I set up a proxy in my browser?
Most proxy providers offer a browser extension that lets you toggle proxy with one click. Smartproxy, Bright Data, and IPRoyal all have Chrome/Firefox extensions. Alternatively, configure proxy in your operating system network settings or use a proxy-management tool like FoxyProxy. For best isolation, use a separate browser profile (or incognito window with extension active) for each verification.
Why does the IP need to match the phone number country?
The target service has a fraud-detection layer that fires before the SMS is dispatched. The layer asks: "Does this user's signup behavior look authentic?" If you are sitting in California requesting an Indonesian number for an Indonesian WhatsApp account, that pattern matches a known account-farming abuse signature. The service silently refuses to send the SMS to discourage abuse. When your IP matches the number country, the signup looks like a normal local user and passes the check.
If I use a proxy, are my SMSVerifier orders private?
The proxy affects your connection to the target service (WhatsApp, Tinder, etc.) — not your connection to SMSVerifier. Your SMSVerifier dashboard, balance, and order history are visible to us regardless of whether you use a proxy. Using a proxy is about appearing geographically consistent to the service you are verifying against, not about hiding from us.
Will SMSVerifier refund my order if I forgot to use a proxy?
Order refunds for non-delivery are automatic regardless of cause. If the SMS does not arrive within twenty minutes, your balance is restored. However, if you continue to place orders without a matching proxy and the SMS keeps failing, the cause is on your side — the cost is the wasted time, not the money. We strongly recommend setting up a proxy before placing the order, not after the first failure.
Can SMSVerifier provide the proxy for me?
Not directly. The proxy affects YOUR connection to the target service, not our connection to the upstream SMS provider. We cannot proxy on your behalf when you are typing the verification code into the third-party site. The recommended approach is to use one of the partner proxy providers above.
